Artificial Intelligence is nowadays pervasive in all domains of science and engineering and IDSIA is particularly active in the following areas, which are of strategic importance to the institute and its partners:
Overview - IDSIA NEW
IDSIA has always embraced its mission as a bridge between basic and applied research, fostering the transfer of scientific advances into real-world solutions. This vision is rooted in IDSIA’s dual affiliation with USI (Università della Svizzera italiana) and SUPSI (University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland).
Over the years, IDSIA has demonstrated a strong ability to generate and deliver innovation for both Swiss and international companies. This impact was formally recognised in 2016 with the award of the Special Swiss ICT Award.

AI for Energy and Environment
Applied research at IDSIA has developed solutions for the efficient management of energy and natural resources. By integrating Operations Research, Artificial Intelligence and Control Engineering and Theory, IDSIA contributes to the design and deployment of efficient, reliable systems to guarantee and support the energy transition. IDSIA is also actively engaged in the application of AI and remote sensing in agriculture, as well as in the development of IoT-based solutions combined with advanced AI algorithms for precision agriculture. As the demand for AI-enhanced technologies to address global sustainability challenges continues to grow, IDSIA is strengthening its commitment in this area, while carefully addressing the critical balance between the benefits of advanced AI methods and the increasing energy consumption they require.

AI in Health and Life Sciences
AI in health and life sciences is a key research area at IDSIA, where seminal contributions have been made, including some of the earliest applications of deep neural networks to the classification of tumoral tissues. Nowadays the focus is still in computer vision for diagnostics, but also on personalised and predictive medicine and in the use of modern Generative AI tools for processing and knowledge extraction from medical data. IDSIA is also active in the development of innovative algorithms combining computational biology and generative AI for the design and synthesis of new molecules. This area collaborates with the Ente Ospedaliero Cantonale (EOC), the Faculty of Biomedicine of USI, the IRB and the IOR institutes of the Bellinzona Institutes of Sciences (BIOS), and the Institute of Digital tecnologies for Personalised Healthcare (MediTech) of SUPSI.

AI for Industry and Finance
IDSIA has been transferring the results of its research to industrial applications in a wide variety of fields, from logistics, to production management and optimisation, from quality control to predictive maintenance. IDSIA’s applied research has been distinctive for its capability to adapt to the requirements of our partner companies, which include both Swiss SMEs, but also large multinational conglomerates. A very relevant area of application is the financial sector, especially thanks to the long standing collaboration with the UBS bank.
